Every childminder I know has a folder of policies somewhere. Printed, laminated, sitting in a drawer since the day they were written. Mine were like that too. I wrote them once, ticked the box, and did not look at them again until an inspection was on the calendar and I was reading my own safeguarding policy like it was somebody else's.
That is the problem with policies. They are not hard to write. They are hard to keep true.
So I built myself a short self audit. Ten questions, nothing clever, just the checks I actually run before I trust a policy to hold up on the day.
Questions about the basics
Is the policy actually about your setting, your rooms, your routines, or does it read like a template anyone could have downloaded? Are the names, the address, and the current assistants correct today, not two years ago? Does it name the right regulator and framework for your nation: Ofsted and the EYFS in England, the Care Inspectorate in Scotland, CIW in Wales, or the relevant HSC Trust in Northern Ireland?
Has it been reviewed in the last twelve months, with the date written on the document itself? When something in your setting changed, a new assistant, a new pet, a different room, did the policy change with it?
Questions that are harder to answer
Would an inspector watching a normal day see exactly what the policy describes? Could you talk about it confidently if a parent or inspector asked, without reaching for the folder? Have parents actually seen it, or can they access it? And do your policies agree with each other, and with your contracts and risk assessments, or do they quietly contradict one another?
Ten yes answers is a strong sign you are in good shape. Every no is your fix list, and it runs in priority order from the top. Most childminders who go through this find two or three. Fixing them usually takes an evening, not a rewrite.
